Doug McNeel Sons of Maverick Press Kit (pdf)

Texas songwriter, Doug McNeel, has been writing, recording and performing songs that are upbeat, funny, thought-provoking and inspiring. His brand of soul-nourishing Texas-Americana music is a rich brew of folk, country, gospel and blues spiced with a Texas flavor.

In October of 2009 Doug released his premier CD, The Great Awakening. Since then three of Doug’s songs on the album have won Honorable Mention awards in the 17th Annual (2009) Billboard World Songwriting Contest: “Blues Universe” (R&B, Blues Category); “Doctor Jesus” (Contemporary Christian/Gospel Category); and “The Great Awakening” (Country Category), with Doug’s musical associate Owen Duggan participating as co-songwriter on “Blues Universe” and “Doctor Jesus.”

Recorded at state of the art recording studio, Salmon Peak, under the guidance of Mark Sinko and technical wizardry of RB Blackstone, the album features excellent musicianship by Kenny Grohman on steel guitar and rhythm, Hank Harrison of Tennessee Valley Authority on fiddle and mandolin, Richard DeLeon on lead guitar, Barry Brake on piano, Adam Booker on upright bass and Darren Kuper on drums. A number of the tracks include pleasing harmony vocals by Gary Birdwell and co-producer Owen Duggan (the creator, performer and producer of an award winning children’s CD, An Elephant Never Forgets).

Truly a son of Maverick, Doug is the great-great grandson of Samuel A. Maverick, the Texas pioneer who never branded his cattle and so gave rise to the term “maverick” to describe independent minded individuals. Challenged by his grandmother at the age of 16 to start writing his own music, Doug accepted the challenge and since then has been writing songs shaped by the folk, country and gospel influences from his early years. Songwriters he admires include Bob Dylan, Lyle Lovett, Willie Nelson, Don McLean, John Denver, Johnny Cash, Arlo Guthrie, Gordon Lightfoot, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Jerry Jeff Walker, John Prine, Thomas Michael Riley, Josh Turner, Delbert McClinton and Mary Chapin Carpenter.

Doug and the current members of The Sons of Maverick are headquartered in and around San Antonio and are available to perform throughout the Texas Hill Country and beyond.
